Periodontal maintenance therapy is an open-ended program designed to help inhibit periodontal disease in gum and bone tissue. Those patients susceptible to periodontal disease or who have been treated for gum disease may require periodontal therapy. Maintenance visits to the periodontist help to prevent future dental issues. By catching the disease in the early stages you save yourself a lot of pain and money.
The bacteria found in plaque are what cause gum disease. Toxins released by these bacteria attack your healthy mouth. If this plaque is not removed quickly enough it hardens and turns to calculus.
Even someone adamant about dental hygiene is unable to completely prevent calculus from forming on the teeth. Flossing and brushing help to keep calculus at bay but regular maintenance and cleaning is required to remove leftover plaque. During maintenance cleaning visits the hygienist will also inspect for any hidden periodontal problems.
Your periodontist will advise you on how often they would like to see you for maintenance visits.
The frequency of these visits will be determined by the type and severity of your periodontal disease, as well as what treatments you’ve had already, your response to prior treatments, and the rate at which your body accumulates plaque buildup. The single most important factor is your dedication to good oral hygiene at home.
